‘
Established in 1944 as a bilingual
weekly paper to serve as the voice of the newly founded General Workers’ Union,
’The Torch’ changed its name in 1959 to it-TORCA. Today, ‘it-TORCA’ has become
an institution of Maltese journalism.
It is the longest running Sunday
paper in Maltese, having celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2009.
‘It-TORCA’ is the best selling newspaper in the Maltese language and its
nationwide circulation is second only to the Sunday Times.
Over the years, ‘it-TORCA’ has
become renowned for setting standards in journalism. Renowned journalists and
editors have worked on ‘it-TORCA’ during the years providing to the public
countless exclusive stories and reports. Contributors of standing, from local
political leaders, artists and activists to international figures, like US
Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, have reached out to the Maltese public from
the pages of ‘it-TORCA’. Since its inception, ‘it-TORCA’ has provided space for
new literary talent and its pages have frequently been the arena of cultural
debate in Malta.

The current editorial team of
‘it-TORCA’ is made up of a small hard working nucleus; an ideal blend of
talent, experience and youthful resourcefulness. Whilst keeping continuity with
tradition, the ‘it-TORCA’ offices are laboratories for new ideas and
journalistic innovation. Such efforts have been acclaimed by juries in local
and international competitions. ‘It-TORCA’ is also socially committed and has
been particularly active in the fields of human and workers’ rights. Such
commitment has been commended by various international institutions such as
Amnesty International, UNHCR and the European Commission.
